Launching the Sound Vision Showcase

Designed as a platform for our young trainees to perform in front of an audience, these events shine the light on the incredible skills and confidence they gain through our skills-based learning programmes.

Our first Showcase took place in Street, Somerset, on 2nd December 2024. The event was put together as a response to the local Chamber of Commerce request for Sound Vision to work in the mid-Somerset region. It was an inspiring evening that provided a fantastic platform for our young performers to demonstrate their talents in front of an invited audience of local decision makers, schools, business, charitable and media networks.

Thank you to The Loft Lounge and Bar in Street, we couldn't have done it without the generous support of the venue. Laura Wolfers, Chair of the Glastonbury and Street Chambers of Commerce, welcomed everyone at the start of the evening. The show that followed featured a mix of musical performances and on-stage conversations and interviews from our trainees, most of whom are school-aged. They displayed their performing abilities, improved confidence and also shared their personal experiences and stories of growth from participating in Sound Vision programmes.

The showcase saw trainees from both of our youth strands perform:

  • Sound Academy, where trainees explore creativity in audio, while making radio and podcasts in a studio environment.

  • And Sound Music, where they build performance confidence, develop music and production skills and learn from industry professionals.

Year 11 Norton Hill School student Alice Rice interviewed Rob Beckley, the High Sheriff of Somerset, who was dressed in his full ceremonial attire. The High Sheriff’s role is particularly focused on highlighting the work of youth groups.

There are so many talented individuals who often go unrecognised. Any opportunity we can take to recognise and help young people fulfil their potential is crucial for community life."

Alice couldn't resist taking the opportunity to ask if the High Sheriff had ever used his sword, to which Rob replied, "Only at making poor attempts to cut a cake."

Deputy Lieutenant Robert Drewett, representing the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, addressed the audience, and praised the impressive self-confidence of our young trainees.

I have been truly fascinated to learn about Sound Vision and am deeply impressed by all of you who have taken part in one form or another tonight. Paraphrasing Dom Chambers, confidence is 80% or more of life. When you face job interviews in the future it will be a walk in the park, because the self-confidence you displayed tonight was truly fantastic. Well done to all who participated."

The trainees were joined on stage by local singer-songwriter Rosie Smith.

Sound Vision brings together people from all different backgrounds, including both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals. The diversity the charity fosters allows all kinds of creativity to be born, grow and develop into something truly special. Creativityalso serves as a way for people to navigate internal and external challenges. Sound Vision helps people build confidence, allowing their talents to shine through. They guide individuals to be their best selves."

The week before, Simon Parkin, host of BBC Somerset’s morning show, interviewed two of our trainees and Dom Chambers, our CEO on his show.

I am very impressed by the work that Sound Vision has been doing. It was amazing to see the mutual respect between the young people, who have achieved so much, and Dom and the team, who have made it all possible. There are so many issues and struggles that affect young people, so it’s incredible to see that broadcasting has place in creating a safe and fun environment that can make a real difference.”

Simon Parkin, BBC Somerset

A huge thanks to Simon and the rest of our amazing audience who cheered on our trainees. The showcase was attended by 50 people, representing local educational, community, media and business networks.

This was a significant milestone for us as we continue to inspire and support young people in their journeys toward self-confidence and success. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the showcase. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for our young trainees.

Donate now, if you would like to make a difference to the lives of young people like these.
